Jammu, Mar 12: The Special Judge, Anti Corruption (CBI Cases), Jammu, has convicted a former Head Goods Clerk at the Goods Office, Northern Railway, Railway Station, Jammu, in a bribery case after nearly 11 years since the registration of the case.
According to the CBI spokesperson, the case dates back to July 8, 2013, when the bureau registered a case based on a complaint against Tarsem Lal, then Chief Goods Supervisor, Tilak Raj, and Kameshwar Singh, both then Head Goods Clerks, at the Goods Office, Northern Railway, Railway Station, Jammu.
The complaint alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 22,000 from the complainant to reduce penalty charges levied due to a delay in lifting the consignment from the Railway Station.
Following the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on the same day, during which Tilak Raj accepted a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant, which he shared with the other two accused persons. All three were subsequently caught and arrested by the trap team.
After the completion of the investigation, a chargesheet was filed before the Court of Ld. Special Judge, Anti Corruption (CBI Cases) Jammu, on January 2, 2014, against all the accused. The charges were framed on April 30, 2014.
During the trial, two accused persons, Tarsem Lal and Kameshwar Singh, passed away, resulting in the abatement of the trial against them.
After the trial, the CBI Court found the only remaining accused, Tilak Raj, guilty. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Wednesday, the spokesperson said.
The CBI presented 21 witnesses and 31 documents/evidences in support of the charges, which stood the test of trial in the court.
