Anantnag, Jan 10: The Dentistry Department at GMC Anantnag has installed a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) machine, allowing the management of simple maxillofacial cases with 3D imaging.
The CBCT was inaugurated by Principal and Dean of GMC Anantnag, Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, in the presence of HoD Dentistry Dr. Sanjeet Singh Risam, Prof. ENT and HNS Prof. Sajad Majid Qazi, Medical Superintendent MMABM Associated Hospital Dr. Arshad Hassan Siddiqui, and other senior doctors.
Dr. Sanjeet Singh Risam, HoD Dentistry, said that it is a major development for the department, and expressed his gratitude to the principal for her efforts. He said the machine fulfills a long-standing need for the region, especially given the high number of road traffic accident cases near the highway. With the CBCT in place, simple maxillofacial cases can now be handled locally instead of being referred elsewhere.
He said the machine provides 3D images comparable to CT scans and will cater to both Dentistry and ENT departments. He added that a dedicated maxillofacial trauma unit is in the pipeline, but services for simpler fracture cases can begin immediately.
Dr. Aadil Wani said that the CBCT enables detailed scans of jawbones and maxillofacial structures, which are often difficult to assess with conventional X-rays. He said this is essential for diagnosing tumours, cysts, and fracture lines in trauma cases and assessing structural abnormalities in maxillary sinuses.
“Until recently, patients requiring such scans had to travel to private facilities,” he said. “The CBCT now ensures better diagnosis and treatment for local residents and that impacted teeth, associated cysts, and tumours can now be evaluated and treated with greater accuracy.”
