Ganderbal, Sept 30: A key bridge in the Thune area of Kangan in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district collapsed nearly two months ago, causing severe difficulties for local residents. The collapse occurred after a cloudburst in the Kao-Cherwan region triggered a flood-like situation.
According to a delegation of local residents, debris from the flood accumulated in the power canal, prompting the Power Development Corporation (PDC) to divert water into an escape channel passing through the village. This overflow led to the collapse of the bridge.
The damaged bridge had served as the main route for villagers, allowing them to avoid a much longer journey. Since its collapse, locals are forced to take extended routes, significantly increasing travel time to and from the village.
Residents are urging the local administration to prioritize the construction of a new concrete bridge to alleviate their ongoing struggles. “This was our only direct connection, and now we have to endure long and inconvenient journeys. We appeal to the authorities to rebuild a sturdy bridge as soon as possible,” said one local representative.
