Pulwama, Aug 30: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Friday organised an educational industrial visit for eighty BIS Students Chapter students from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, at NIT Srinagar. As per a statement issued here, accompanied by Assistant Professors Dr. Aravi Muzaffar and Dr. Irfan Samad Wani, the students visited the JSW Steel Plant Lasipora on August 30, to gain hands-on exposure to critical national standards and manufacturing processes in the steel industry. During the visit, students were given detailed explanations of the manufacturing processes used at the plant for products conforming to Indian Standards IS 14246 and IS 15965. These products—pre-painted galvanized steel sheets and aluminium zinc alloy coated steel sheets and coils—are manufactured on-site under strict compliance with mandatory BIS certification. The practical demonstration underscored how these standards are applied throughout the production cycle to ensure quality and regulatory compliance. The highlight of the visit was a detailed presentation and demonstration by Shri Saaqib Raahi, Scientist C/Deputy Director, BIS.  Raahi explained the Indian Standards IS 14246 and IS 15965, including the associated test methods and technical requirements. He encouraged students to use BIS standards as authoritative references in their research papers to enhance the quality and relevance of their academic work. A live demonstration of the BIS portal was provided to familiarise students with accessing these standards for future research and practical applications.  Sheikh Bilal, Plant Head, encouraged students to explore the JSW and BIS portals for employment updates and internships, motivating them to pursue BIS Lab internships to develop skills aligned with industry needs. The faculty members underscored the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge with evolving Indian Standards. This industrial visit successfully bridged academic learning with industry practices, highlighting the vital role of Indian Standards in advancing India’s metallurgical sector.
