Srinagar, June 4: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness a major expansion in its winter tourism sector as authorities have identified seven potential locations for the development of new ski destinations across the Union Territory.
According to officials familiar with the development, the proposed sites include Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Doodhpathri and Tosamaidan in Budgam district, and Bangus in Kupwara district. In the Jammu division, Sarthal in Kathua, Sanasar-Patnitop in Ramban, and Bhaderwah in Doda have been shortlisted for detailed evaluation.
An official, requesting anonymity, said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to diversify tourism offerings and strengthen J&K’s position as a prominent winter sports destination. The locations have been selected on the basis of snowfall patterns, terrain suitability, accessibility, and tourism potential.
The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) has been designated as the nodal agency for the project. Consultancy firms with expertise in winter sports infrastructure are expected to conduct feasibility studies and assess the viability of each location.
Officials added the assessment will focus on several factors, including tourist footfall, duration and consistency of snowfall, snow retention on slopes, gradient suitability for skiers of different skill levels, road connectivity, accommodation facilities, and other supporting infrastructure.
If found feasible, the project could pave the way for the development of ski slopes, chairlifts, drag lifts, and related facilities aimed at attracting adventure tourists and winter sports enthusiasts.
Tourism stakeholders believe the initiative has the potential to create employment opportunities, support local businesses, and boost economic activity in remote areas. It may also help distribute tourist traffic more evenly across J&K and reduce pressure on established destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Officials said environmental sustainability would remain a key consideration throughout the planning and development process. Efforts would be made to ensure that tourism infrastructure is developed in harmony with the fragile mountain ecosystem.
