Bandipora, Jan 13: Once marred by the chaos of bombardment, Bagtore Stadium in Gurez Valley, just a few kilometers from the Line of Control, has blossomed into a hub of sports activities, hosting an impressive tally of 30 tournaments in 2023.
Situated in the border village of Bagtore, Gurez Valley, this verdant playfield, flanked by Indian Army bunkers, was a focal point of hostilities until 2021. The region, previously targeted by Pakistani Rangers, has undergone a remarkable transformation since the ceasefire between the two nations came into effect on February 25, 2021.
The Bagtore playfield, once a haunting reminder of war, now resonates with the cheers of spectators and the thud of cricket bats. The transition has been marked by the diligent efforts of Youth Services and Sports Bandipora, which organized a variety of sports events, including volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, tug of war, and trekking, catering to different age groups under 14 and 17.
A senior official from District Administration Bandipora reported that a total of 24 events saw enthusiastic participation, with 1530 boys and 650 girls, totaling 2180. Notably, a cricket tournament supervised by Youth Services and Sports witnessed the involvement of 12 private cricket teams and clubs, comprising 192 youths from across Kashmir.
Collaborative efforts between the army and locals resulted in fifteen cricket tournaments throughout 2023, attracting 1430 cricketers from various regions. The newfound vibrancy in Bagtore has brought joy to the residents, who, for decades, endured the grim reality of shelling and conflict.
Mudasir Hussain, a 26-year-old cricket enthusiast, expressed his happiness at witnessing the positive transformation of the playfield. Recalling the days when artillery shells disrupted their dreams, he said, “We were always worried about when our dreams and aspirations would become a reality. The ceasefire agreement of 2021 finally brought the long-awaited respite”.
Arif Lone, another local, highlighted the significant social transformation in the area over the past two years. With the fear of shelling dissipating, Bagtore Stadium has become a safe haven for sports enthusiasts, attracting large crowds during cricket matches.
“The area now echoes with peace and happiness. The boys are enjoying themselves,” Arif said, urging the administration to continue organizing such events in 2024. The story of Bagtore Stadium is a testament to the resilience of communities in conflict-ridden regions finding solace and joy in the spirit of sportsmanship.
