Srinagar, May 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Jammu and Poonch on May 29 to assess the security situation and meet families affected by recent terrorist attacks, Jammu and Kashmir BJP President Sat Sharma confirmed on Tuesday.
Sharma told Rising Kashmir that while the visit is primarily official, it also carries a strong message of solidarity and reassurance. “The Home Minister’s presence here reflects the Centre’s unwavering commitment to peace, security, and the well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Shah is expected to interact with families in Poonch who lost loved ones in recent attacks in border and hinterland areas of the Jammu region.
About meeting with BJP leadership in UT, Sharma said they have asked for a time slot and it depends whether any meeting will be held or not with leadership.
In the recent cross-border shelling, multiple casualties were reported and significant property damage occurred in Poonch district, which bore the brunt of the attack.
In addition to consoling the bereaved families, the home minister will chair high-level meetings with top officials from the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and intelligence agencies to review ground-level security arrangements.
Sharma said that HM Shah will be briefed on counter-infiltration operations, border surveillance measures, and internal security preparedness.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control and increased drone activity, particularly following Operation Sindoor—India’s retaliatory strike across the border earlier this month after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 25 civilians including tourists.
Security across the region has been intensified ahead of the high-profile visit, with additional deployments and aerial surveillance in vulnerable zones.
Shah’s visit is expected to reinforce the Centre’s strategy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and strengthen coordination between central and local security agencies.
This will be HM Shah’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the April 22 terrorist Pahalgam attack.
