Government of India on Friday appointed Lt Gen Anup Banerji as the first Executive Director of AIIMS Awantipora.

He will serve as the executive director for a period of three years.

Banerji also served as Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DG AFMS) before his superannuation. An alumnus of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, the officer is an outstanding cardiologist and an exceptional administrator. He has held various important clinical and staff positions during his career in AFMS.

According to an official order of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, “ The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Health & Family Welfare for appointment of the following persons to the posts of Executive Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences at (i) Bhopal (ii) Bhubaneshwar (iii) Patna (iv) Rishikesh (v) Guwahati (vi) Awantipora, and (vii) Darbhanga, in Level 15 of the Pay Matrix plus admissible NPA, on deputation/short term contract/contract basis, for a period of 03 years w e f the date of assumption of charge of the post (which may further be extended upto 05 years), or till the incumbent attains the age of 70 years, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest,”.

In April last year, the Ministry had invited applications from the citizens of India including non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin for filling up the post of executive director on deputation/short-term contract/ contract basis.

“The appointment on deputation/short term contract/contract basis will be for three years which can be extended up to five years or up to attaining the age of 70 years or until further orders, whichever is the earliest,” read the advertisement notice.

The executive director will act as chief executive Officer (CEO) of the respective institutions. The post will be operated at the respective institution.
In 2015, the Centre announced the setting up of AIIMS-like institutions in Kashmir and Jammu. Both these projects are part of Rs 80068 crore financial package announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 7, 2015 for infrastructure building in J&K.

In 2019, the Union Cabinet approved AIIMS Kashmir with an estimated cost of Rs 1828 crore.

Last month, Chief Secretary Arum Mehta asked officials to start the first batch of students by December this year.
