Pulwama, Aug 09: ‘Mere Maati Mera Desh’ campaign observed under Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav has turned as a boon for female potters of Chandgam village in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district registered with various Self Help Groups( SHG’s) under NRLM ( National Rural Livelihood Mission) .
Officials informed Rising Kashmir that the Rural Development Department ( RDD) placed a time bound order for Diyas ( soil lamps) and Kalashs ( earthen pots ) to female potters of Chandgam village which has boosted the morale of these potters.
“ We received the order from RDD through NRLM,” a female potter said, adding that they were given a week’s time to complete the assignment.
She informed that in the area around 25 families were engaged in pottery but the craft faded out gradually as demand for earthen pots started falling in the market.
She added that only a few elders were keeping the art of pottery alive while the younger generation used to show a disconnect with this craft.
The potter informed that after many members from the potter community joined SHGs under NRLM the dying art of pottery is getting revived in Chandgam village.
She said that various self-help groups dealing in milk processing supported potters by buying their products.
Arshid Ahmad Bhat, District Programme Manager NRLM, Pulwama, said that they had introduced an innovative idea of selling milk and other milk products in earthen pots a couple of years ago which infused a new life into the art of pottery.
“The idea was emulated by milk processing companies which also purchase pottery items from our SHGs,” he said, adding that now many youngsters are taking a keen interest in the art of pottery.
He informed that the SHG members completed the job within stipulated time and the consignment stands supplied.
Assistant Commissioner Development ( ACD) Pulwama, Dr Peerzada Farhat, said that the order to female potters of Chandgam village was routed through NRLM for around 6500 Diyas and 500 Kalashs.
“This order will give a boost to the art of pottery in the village which otherwise was on the verge of extinction,” he said, adding that these items will be used during different occasions for observing the Mere Maati Mera Desh Campaign.
He added that the female potters were very happy after receiving the order.
