Amar Singh College hosts cultural event

Srinagar, June 19: In continuation to the series of events being organized under the aegis of Vitasta Festival, a colorful cultural event was held at Amar Singh College, Srinagar on Saturday as part of the on-going Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The festival was aimed at bringing forth the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir in general and the revival of communal harmony and unity in diversity, which has been an inseparable part of this region, since times immemorial. 
The festival witnessed a galaxy of artists and talented performers from across the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir showcasing the traditional folk performances of various regions.
The event consisted of traditional folk performances like Bhand Pather, Bach Nagma, Kudijagarna, Dhambali, Dogri Dance, Geetru, Kashmiri Rouff etc.
The cultural festival began with a warm welcome address by Prof Heena Amin, Convenor, Cultural Committee, Amar Singh College. Prof. Heena emphasized upon the importance of understanding our culture through traditional folk performing arts and the need to preserve our identity.
The event began with a Qawali by Basit and his team, from the department of Music, Amar Singh College, followed by Bach Nagma by Ishfaq Ahmad and his team. A folk dance of Jammu region was performed by Kalu Devi and her group while Mushtaq Ahmad and his group performed a traditional Rouf, followed by Jagarna, a traditional folk dance of Jammu region by Rakesh Khona and party.
Another beautiful performance called Sukshami was performed by a group from Sukhshami Academy, Jammu. The artists enthralled the huge audience by their talent and earned applause from the audience.
Principal of the host college, Prof. Sheikh Ajaz Bashir appreciated and congratulated all the performing teams and the cultural committee and department of music of the college for the successful event. He said that every nation and region has its own cultural identity, which is depicted through its tongue, literature, folklore and unique dance styles etc.
Programme Officer, North Zone Cultural Centre Patiala, Ministry of Culture, GoI, Ravinder Sharma, who was present on the occasion extended his gratitude to the host college and appreciated the thrilling performances by the artists.
A large number of guests, faculty and students attended the event and applauded all for such an entertaining programme.
 Syed Mansha and Arif Rasheed conducted the proceedings of the programme. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by renowned Radio & TV artist Gulshan Badrani, while as Prof. Ovais Ahmad & Prof. Suzain Rasheed acted as Rapporteurs.
