Jammu, Feb 23: Both the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), i.e Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) of J&K UT have expressed their reservations over the imposition of property tax from April 1st onwards claiming that they were not taken on board.
“The notification regarding imposition of property tax came right from the top and we (JMC) were not taken on board and not even consulted in any way,” JMC Mayor, Rajinder Sharma informed when contacted by Rising Kashmir adding, “We (JMC) will have to collect the property tax but we (JMC) have been superseded by the Administrative Council and not taken on board”.
This is against the three tier democratic system as we talk about, he said. The powers of JMC as an elected body have been superseded, the Mayor said adding the aspirations of the people and the councillors concerned should have been taken on board before taking this decision.
The JMC had also called an emergency General House meeting tomorrow on Friday to discuss the issue and take suggestions of the corporators regarding property tax.
The suggestions and concerns of the corporators expressed in the meeting regarding property tax will be conveyed to the Lieutenant Governor (LG), Manoj Sinha, BJP National President, JP Nadda, BJP J&K UT President Ravinder Raina in the form of a memorandum, the Mayor told Rising Kashmir.
However, sources said that the meeting has been postponed as many corporators of the JMC are not available as some of them are out of station.
“We will soon convene the General House meeting within couple of days as soon as all the corporators are here to attend the meeting,” the JMC Mayor said adding, “The concerns expressed by the corporators in the General House meeting will be conveyed to the LG, JP Nadda and the BJP J&K UT President Ravinder Raina in the form of memorandum”.
