Anantnag, May 04: In a major drive against the eradication of narcotic drug cultivation, police along with officials of the Excise and Revenue Department destroyed the poppy cultivation spread over six kanals of land in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The special team of police headed by SHO Police Station Srigufwara Sajad Ahmad Wani, Tehsildar Srigufwara, and officials of the Excise department carried out a drive against the poppy cultivation on Thursday in the Adlash village of Srigufwara-Bijbehara.
Tehsildar Srigufwara Nusrat told Rising Kashmir that they destroyed the poppy cultivation spread over six kanals and ten marlas of land in the Adlash area of Srigufwara-Bijbehara.
She said the drive is part of an ongoing effort under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Drugs (NDPS) Act to combat the illegal cultivation of cannabis and poppy. “Such drives will continue till the menace is completely rooted out from society,” she said.
SHO Srigufwara said that FIR has been registered against all the accused persons who are involved in this illegal activity. The destruction of the poppy cultivation is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal drug trade in the region, he said.
“We have appealed to the locals to refrain from engaging in such illegal activities and cooperate with the authorities in their efforts to maintain law and order,” the police officer said.
The authorities have also urged the public to come forward with any information about the illegal poppy cultivation and drug trafficking in the area.
