Doctors at the Associated Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag on Saturday discharged a patient who underwent a real surgery. A 29-year-old patient was having a Parapharyngeal Space Tumour.
Parapharyngeal Space is hidden space between the skull and neck on either side which makes these tumours difficult to diagnose. Also, tumours in this site are rarely seen in just 0.5% of all head and neck tumours.
Dr Amir Yousuf and his team performed the rear surgery at GMC’s Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and Head and Neck Surgery (HNS) Department with the support of the anesthesia team headed by Dr Anjum Shamim.
The patient was earlier evaluated by senior consultant Dr Omar Shafi and was advised to go for CT Scan. On evaluation he was diagnosed with right Parapharyngeal Tumor and tumor mapping was done by Dr Owais H Dar.
“The ENT doctors operated on the patient and removed a 5-centimetre tumour via transcervical procedure with less than 10 ml blood loss,” says Dr Amir, adding that the patient is doing well in the post-operative period.
He stated that parapharyngeal space tumours are extremely rare and difficult to diagnose, and the surgical approach is somewhat difficult due to the presence of major vessels and nerves in the region (neck).
“The Ear, Nose, and Throat Department headed by Prof Sajad Majid Qazi are doing routine and advanced ENT as well as Head and Neck Surgery,” he explained.
Dr Amir said, with the administrative support from Prof Dr Tariq Syed Qureshi, Principal of GMC Anantnag and Medical Superintendent Dr M Iqbal Sofi the medical college is progressing in all specialities and is working for more advancement in the future.
“ENT and HNS department has performed more than 200 cancer surgeries of head and neck like thyroid and salivary gland, larynx and paranasal sinus so far,” he added.
