Bandipora, Sep 20: A capacity building workshop on nutritional security for different stakeholders engaged in promoting and ensuring nutritional security of the vast majority of the population living in rural settings was organized by KVK-Gurez.
The programme organized at Mountain Agriculture Research and Extension Station (MAR&ES), Izmarg was attended by Anganwadi workers working under ICDS, ASHA workers of different villages, members of different SHGs formed under NRLM, women, farmers and farm women from different villages of the region.
Speaking about the event, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Bhat, Programme Coordinator, KVK Gurez said that although the country has ensured food security for all; nutritional security for all is yet to be achieved. The lack of nutritional security is manifested in various forms like stunting & wasting, PEM, anemic children and mothers. This ultimately has a bearing on the economy of nation. So, nutritional security is as vital a component as the food security is. Deliberating upon the importance of this month; Dr. Parveen Kumar, SMS (Ag. Extension) at KVK Gurez told that the month of September every year is celebrated as National Nutrition Month all across the country. The month long compaign aims to make the public aware of the importance of a balanced nutrition in maintaining good health. The main purpose is to raise awareness on the importance of balanced nutrition for human body. Healthy individuals are an asset for any country.
Good nutrition helps to manage healthy weight, maintains the immune system and provides energy. A well-balanced diet, with a combination of all the essential nutrients, plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of our mind and body.
Dr. Kumar also sensitized the participants of this capacity building programme on various aspects of a healthy and balanced diet, dietary diversification, diet for different age groups and for different professions. He also briefed them on various agricultural practices such as organic and natural farming which produce pure and healthy food. Dr. M. M. Magray Asstt. Professor (Veg. Sc,) in his address spoke on the importance of vegetables and fruits in ensuring good health. Dr. Magray also took the participants to various demonstration units and Polyhouses.
