Kathua, Sep 07: BJP leader and former minister Rajeev Jasrotia on Thursday inaugurated a Dangal – a traditional wrestling competition – in Kathua.
The Dangal was organised by the local committee of Ward-11 and Ward-12 Kathua to mark Janmashtami celebrations wherein wrestlers from Jammu and Kashmir participated. Jasrotia was the chief guest and 30 bouts were organised during the event.
Jasrotia appreciated the Dangal committee for arranging the mega event and said, “It plays an important role in keeping the youth on the right track and away from drug abuse. Such types of events revive our culture and are a beautiful example of communal harmony.”
He emphasised the need to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship and its rule in national character building. He said the event has become a cemetery force between people of different regions and provides encouragement to the local wrestlers. “Children who are indulged in physical activities sustain good values of mutual respect and cooperation. Playing sports teaches them skills such as accountability, leadership, and learning to work with a sense of responsibility and confidence,” he said.
“Just like a diet of healthy nutrients is needed for nourishing the body, playing sports holds a great significance in enhancing our lives, especially for growing children. As a student, one has to face many challenges, and playing sports helps them cope with the exam pressure and prepare them for further challenges by providing them with physical and mental strength,” he said.
Jasrotia said that in today’s era of excessive competition and a changing environment, people barely care about health and have to face its consequences in the later stages of their lives. “They easily become prey to many life-threatening health issues. Those who are indulged in regular physical activities can easily defend themselves from such diseases. Therefore, playing sports can resolve this concern,” he said, adding, “Playing regular sports can help maintain diabetes, improve heart function, and reduce stress and tension in an individual.”
The committee thanked the chief guest, the local administration and others for making the event a success.
