Baramulla, Aug 24: Department of ENT at the Government Medical College Baramulla conducted two life-changing cochlear implant surgeries on Thursday.
The beneficiaries of these surgeries were two 4-year-old children—one hailing from the district of Kupwara and the other from Baramulla.
A health care official said that both children were born with congenital deafness, preventing them from developing speech.
“Under the auspices of the Assistance to Disabled Persons (ADIP) scheme of the Government of India, these surgeries were performed at no cost to the families,” he said.
He said that each cochlear implant, valued at approximately 6 lakhs, was also provided free of charge.
Prof. Dr. Kapil Sikka and Dr. Arvind Kairo from AIIMS New Delhi, led the surgical procedures.
The surgeries were carried out under the skillful hands of Dr. Zafarullah Beigh, Assistant Professor of ENT, with guidance from the AIIMS Delhi surgeons.
A team of proficient audiologists from Chandigarh and Delhi lent their expertise, along with the anesthesia department from Government GMC Baramulla, led by Prof. Basharat and doctors Waseem and Tahleel. Prof. Dr. Nazir Khan, Head of ENT, commended the collective effort of the team, while Prof. Ruby Rishi, Principal of GMC Baramulla, guided the implementation of this commendable initiative.
The meticulous logistical arrangements required for these surgeries were orchestrated by Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent of GMC Baramulla.
Principal Prof. Ruby Rishi felicitated the surgical team in the presence of heads of departments and the Medical Superintendent.
Healthcare officials said that this achievement not only restored the gift of hearing to these children but also exemplified the collaborative spirit of medical professionals working towards a common goal.
