JAMMU, Mar 07: Women across the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, who have triumphed over challenges to achieve remarkable success, attribute much of their accomplishments to the unwavering support of their mothers and families.
Sheetal Nanda, Commissioner Secretary of the Social and Welfare Department, emphasized that while significant progress has been made in empowering women, there remains work to be done to achieve full equality in society.
“Urban areas of Jammu and Kashmir have made significant strides in empowering women, but there is still a need for concerted efforts to empower women in rural areas,” Nanda remarked, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about gender equality in rural communities.
As the lone woman to clear the IAS from Jammu and Kashmir in 2006, Nanda acknowledged the challenges faced by women in various fields but emphasized that with encouragement, women can achieve remarkable heights akin to men.
KritikaKhanna, a Para Rower from Jammu and Kashmir, echoed Nanda’s sentiments, emphasizing the crucial role of family support, especially from mothers, in empowering women.
“The foundation of a woman’s success lies in the support she receives from her family, particularly her mother,” Kritika remarked, reflecting on her own journey to success.
Kritika, who clinched a Bronze Medal in the 2019 Para Asian Games held in South Korea, recalled her journey from adversity to triumph. Despite losing her leg in a tragic accident in 2003, Kritika persevered and is now employed with the Jammu and Kashmir Grameen Bank.
“I was going to appear for my class 12th exams along with my friend on a scooty,” she said, adding, “we met with an accident near Asia Hotel in which I lost my log, while my friend escaped unhurt”.
“I overcame my disability through hard work, and now, thanks to government support, I am self-reliant,” Kritika affirmed, illustrating the transformative power of determination and support.
On this Women’s Day, the stories of Sheetal Nanda and KritikaKhanna stand as shining examples of resilience and empowerment, inspiring women across Jammu and Kashmir to pursue their dreams despite any challenges they may face.
