Kulgam, Nov  16: In a joint drive conducted by a team comprising Revenue; Police; Food Safety; Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA); Municipality; and Legal Metrology, three shops were sealed in Kulgam on Thursday for violating established norms.

An official said that the primary objective of the drive was to ensure compliance with the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

He said, the team led by Tehsildar Kulgam, Bilal Ahmad, on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, the inspection was carried out in Kulgam town. The scrutiny led to the sealing of three shops for violations. Also, a collective fine amounting to 9500 rupees was imposed on shopkeepers found to be non-compliant with regulatory standards.

Bilal Ahmad, Tehsildar Kulgam, told Rising Kashmir that besides sealing the shops and imposing fines, the enforcement team also recovered five domestic LPG cylinders from units operating commercially.

“We also issued five challans under COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act). It’s crucial to regulate the market and ensure no profiteering, with all shopkeepers adhering to established norms and regulations,” he said.

He further said, “we are aiming for quality products accessible to the public while also ensuring traders maintain hygiene.” The tehsil administration stands in support of both the people and shopkeepers, striving to prevent unethical practices in product sales within the market.
