Srinagar, Oct 26: In a grand event held at Tagore Hall today, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presented awards in various categories for the 2nd International Film Festival of Srinagar (TIFFS). This edition of TIFFS was dedicated to the memory of the iconic figure of Indian Cinema, Dev Anand Sahib.
During his address, the Lieutenant Governor extended his congratulations to the award winners and praised the ‘Vomedh Organisation’ for its commendable efforts in promoting theatre, culture, language, and cinema in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Cinema connects people and brings them closer. Bollywood has made a special contribution to strengthen diversity of our nation with the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. It is a powerful medium to nourish social-cultural ethos and advance human values,” the Lt Governor said.
He acknowledged the significant influence of the Indian film industry on society since India’s independence, noting how it has popularized the country’s rich culture and tradition worldwide. The film industry, he emphasized, acts as an agent of social change and provides livelihood opportunities to a large segment of the population associated with the sector.
The Lt. Governor took the opportunity to discuss the strong bond between Jammu and Kashmir and the world of cinema. He highlighted the administration’s efforts to create a vibrant film ecosystem in the Union Territory, citing steps such as the introduction of a new film policy and the operationalization of cinema halls in various districts, reviving the golden days of J&K’s movie culture.
He assured the continued support and assistance from the administration to organizations like Vomedh in their endeavours to popularize film festivals and similar cultural activities in the Union Territory.
The event also paid tribute to the immense contributions of Dev Anand to the film industry. The Lt. Governor praised the impeccable style and artistry of the celebrated actor and filmmaker, noting that he gave a new meaning and respectability to Bollywood.
The 2nd International Film Festival of Srinagar featured 30 feature films, short films, and documentaries from 17 countries, providing a diverse cinematic experience for enthusiasts.
During the ceremony, the renowned filmmaker B Subhash was honoured with the prestigious KL Saigal Award.
Several notable dignitaries were present at the event, including Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Bidhuri, Secretary JKAACL Bharat Singh Manhas, Rakesh Roshan Bhat (Festival Director, TIFFS), and prominent artists and film personalities.
