Kashmir celebrates 79th Independence Day with unity, patriotism

DDC Chairpersons hoist National Flag; pay tributes to martyrs, highlight dev profiles

Srinagar, Aug 15: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across Kashmir division on Friday with a renewed spirit of patriotism and solidarity, commemorating the historic occasion and reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage and the resilient spirit of its people.The day was marked by a host of events across all districts, including flag-hoisting ceremonies, addresses by the chief guests and heartfelt tributes to the freedom fighters who shaped the nation’s journey toward independence. They extended warm greetings to the people on the 79th Independence Day.The celebrations coincided with the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ emphasising India’s journey of independence and fostering patriotism in every household. Tributes were paid to those who lost their lives in Thursday’s cloudburst incident in Kishtwar, with all cultural events cancelled as a mark of respect.In Ganderbal, the main event was held at Qamaria Stadium, where Chairperson District Development Council (DDC), Nuzhat Ishfaq, hoisted the national flag and took the salute at a parade comprising contingents from J&K Police, CRPF, Forest Protection Force, and school students. She spoke about the district’s growth, focusing on public safety, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and socio-economic prosperity. The event was attended by local officials, officers, and citizens, with flag-hoisting at various sub-divisions and Panchayats.Pulwama’s main function took place at the District Police Lines, where DDC Chairperson, Syed Abdul Bari Andrabi, hoisted the flag and reviewed a march-past featuring contingents from the Police, Army, CRPF, Fire Services, NCC cadets, and students. Andrabi highlighted the district’s development achievements, including recognition at the national level for governance and progress. Pulwama’s Block Ichegoza secured second place among 500 blocks in NITI Aayog’s Delta Rankings and received the National ODOP Award 2024.Similarly, in Kulgam, the main celebration was held at District Police Lines, where Chairperson M. Afzal Parrey hoisted the flag and took the salute at the march-past. The event was attended by officials and citizens, with celebrations also at the subdivision and Panchayat levels, promoting a sense of unity and progress.In Kupwara, the District Police Lines hosted the main event, with Chairman Irfan Sultan Panditpori hoisting the flag and inspecting the parade. The contingents included CRPF, J&K Police, NCC cadets, and school children. Panditpori highlighted the district’s recent achievements, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence and the sanctioning of the Sadhna Tunnel for border connectivity. Floral tributes were paid to martyrs, and flag-hoisting ceremonies were held across all subdivisions and educational institutions.Bandipora’s celebration took place at S.K. Sports Stadium, where Chairperson Abdul Gani Bhat hoisted the flag and took the salute at a march-past involving contingents from the police, paramilitary forces, NCC, and students. The district administration highlighted progress in tourism, healthcare, and infrastructure, especially in remote areas like Gurez and Tulail.Shopian’s main event was held at District Police Lines, where DDC Chairperson Bilqees Jan hoisted the flag and inspected the parade. She emphasised the district’s development efforts and the government’s commitment to making Shopian a model district in infrastructure and social development.At Budgam, the main celebration was at the Sports Stadium, where Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat hoisted the flag and reviewed the march-past of contingents from various forces and schools. The DC spoke about the district’s transformation, major projects, and inclusive growth, affirming the government’s resolve to ensure benefits reach every citizen.Across all districts, flag-hoisting ceremonies took place at municipal, school, police stations, and Panchayat levels, fostering patriotism and community participation. Leaders and officials paid homage to martyrs and reiterated their commitment to development and national unity.This year’s Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir reflected a collective spirit of pride, resilience, and hope for a prosperous future, with communities coming together to honour the sacrifices of their heroes and pledge continued progress.
