Ganderbal, July 28: As part of its ongoing efforts to promote sports and physical fitness among schoolchildren, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), Ganderbal organised two major sporting events on Monday—the Inter-School District Level Judo Championship and the Inter-School Zonal Level Cricket Tournament (U-17) for boys.As per a statement issued here, held at the Indoor Sports Complex, Sehpora, the Judo Championship saw enthusiastic participation from around 100 student athletes, including 58 boys and 42 girls representing various schools across the district. The event highlighted the strength, discipline, and commitment integral to the sport of Judo. Among the standout performers were Aisha Hassan and Baiza Tariq of Hanfia School, Sehpora—both national-level silver medallists from last year’s National Games—whose continued excellence served as a source of motivation for budding judokas across the district. Meanwhile, at the Open Ground, Fatehpora, Zone Ganderbal hosted the U-17 cricket tournament, which featured spirited competition among schools from the zone. The final match between New Dreamland Educational Institute and Hill Top Educational Institute was a sporting spectacle that ended in a rare tie. After the match proceeded to a Super Over, which also ended in a tie, the outcome was decided through a Ball-Out, where New Dreamland Educational Institute edged out their rivals in a nail-biting finish. Both teams were lauded for their exceptional skill and sportsmanship. Trophies and certificates were presented by senior officials of the Youth Services and Sports Department, who commended the participants for upholding the true spirit of competition. The twin events reaffirm DYSS Ganderbal’s commitment to nurturing young talent and building a strong sporting culture in the district.
