Srinagar, Jul 25: The vital Dandakadal (Bulls Bridge) bridge in Langate area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district remains non-operational for the third consecutive year, causing immense hardship to residents on both sides of the Nallah Mawar stream.Locally known as Dandakadal, the bridge sustained damage during flash floods over three years ago. Despite repeated assurances from the authorities, it has not been repaired, forcing locals to take long and costly routes for their daily commutes and agricultural work.Mudassir Ahmed, a local, told Rising Kashmir that they have repeatedly raised the issue with concerned officials. “They visited the site several times and assured us the bridge would be restored within months. But years have passed, and no action has been taken on the ground,” he said. The delay has particularly impacted farmers. Most of Langate’s paddy fields lie on the other side of the bridge. “We are forced to pay high transport charges just to carry our produce,” Ahmed added. In summer, many residents attempt to cross the Nallah Mawar on foot, a risky move since the original route would only take two minutes. The alternative paths take hours.Haleema Begum, a local woman, said the bridge is a lifeline for families. “Our children have to walk extra miles to school. Women face more problems, especially during medical emergencies. We feel abandoned,” she said.Officials had earlier claimed that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted to higher authorities. However, locals say there has been no update or confirmation about the proposal’s approval or funding.Despite many attempts to reach the Executive Engineer, R&B Division, Langate, he was not available for his comments.Residents are now appealing to the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department Minister for urgent intervention to restore this critical link. “The bridge is essential for our daily needs and livelihoods,” said another resident.Until action is taken, the dysfunctional Dandakadal bridge remains a glaring example of administrative apathy and a daily challenge for Langate’s people.
