Ganderbal, Jun 17: Member of Parliament (MP), Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday said he is in constant touch with the Government of India (GoI) regarding the safe evacuation of Indian students and pilgrims currently stuck in Iran due to the closure of airspace and rising regional tensions.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing developmental projects in Ganderbal, the MP said, “Israel is backed by Western powers, while Iran is fighting alone. Diplomatic efforts are urgently needed to prevent further escalation and ensure peace in the region.”
Referring to the Indian students stranded in various parts of Iran, Ruhullah confirmed that the GoI has begun the registration process and assured him that evacuation will be prioritised once the airspace reopens. “We are closely following up with the concerned ministries. The government has assured us that the moment the airspace opens, efforts will be made to bring our citizens back safely,” he said.
Mehdi said temporary internal relocation efforts have already begun. “Yesterday, we tried to ensure that students in Tehran and other high-risk areas were shifted to safer locations. Some have been moved to Qom, and I’ve personally spoken to several of them. They are in need of support for accommodation and other facilities, and I’ve assured them of all possible help,” he added.
