Srinagar, May 26: In a major boost to its administrative and economic standing, Srinagar district has emerged as the top performer in the Kashmir division and second overall in Jammu and Kashmir under the fourth edition of the district Good Governance Index (DGGI 4.0) for the year 2023–24. The ranking, released by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday, recognizes excellence in governance, infrastructure development and service delivery across all 20 districts of the Union Territory.
Srinagar secured an impressive composite score of 6.5840, earning first rank in the Kashmir division and 2nd rank across J&K. The district demonstrated exceptional performance in sectoral indicators, achieving, first rank in Industries and allied sectors, second rank in public infrastructure and utilities and rank in environmental management.
The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, termed the achievement “a proud moment for the district,” attributing the success to “collective teamwork and the tireless efforts of all departments.” He emphasised the role of coordinated governance and data-driven planning in securing top positions. Meanwhile, in a first-of-its-kind economic assessment, Srinagar has also emerged as a leading economic driver of Jammu and Kashmir. As per the newly released District Domestic Product (DDP) estimates, the district contributes 14.53 percent to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) despite representing just 10.08 percent of the UT’s population.
Further underlining its economic significance, Srinagar recorded the highest Per Capita Income among all districts, with a figure of Rs 1,88,723, well above the Union Territory average of Rs 1,30,492. The Chief Minister, while congratulating all Deputy Commissioners, praised Srinagar’s dual success in governance and economic performance as a model for integrated development. The achievements position Srinagar as a flagship district of J&K, setting new benchmarks for both administrative efficiency and economic growth.
