Diu/Jammu, May 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Beach Volleyball team has made an impressive mark in the first edition of the Khelo India Beach Games currently being held at Diu (Union Territory). The team has entered victory mode, defeating strong contenders and earning nationwide recognition with their stellar performance.
In the second match, J&K emerged victorious against Chhattisgarh, winning by 2-1 sets (21-15, 18-21, 15-7). The dynamic duo Imtiaz and Azgar enthralled spectators with their powerful spikes and strong defensive tactics, securing another win for the team.
Earlier, the team had a spectacular start by defeating the host team of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in straight sets (21-15, 21-9). Imtiaz and Azahar showcased exceptional teamwork and technique, leaving the hosts overwhelmed and setting the tone for the tournament.
Despite limited infrastructure and no access to coastal facilities, the players from J&K demonstrated extraordinary grit and determination, earning their place among the top 8 beach volleyball teams in India. This achievement reflects not only their talent but also their unwavering discipline, determination, and devotion. The championship features teams from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Jammu & Kashmir.
The J&K Sports Council, in collaboration with the Volleyball Association of J&K, selected and trained a six-member contingent, including players, a coach, and a manager, during trials held at MA Stadium, Jammu. The team is being coached by Mohd Tariq (Joint Secretary Volleyball Association of J&K) and managed by Vijay Kumar Magotra (General Secretary Volleyball Association of J&K). Kuldip Magotra, CEO of the Volleyball Association of J&K, has been nominated as a Technical Official for the event.
During an interaction with players and officials of J&K UT, A.J. Kuldip Magotra praised the efforts of the J&K UT Government and Sports Council, stating, “The exposure being provided to our athletes through such national platforms is invaluable. We are committed to ensuring the excellence of our players, no matter the challenges.” He also lauded the “My Youth, My Pride” initiative, which is being powerfully represented through sports achievements like this.
The team’s participation and performance reflect the growing sports culture and potential in J&K, setting a new benchmark for excellence in beach volleyball and beyond.
