Srinagar, Apr 08: Light to moderate rain lashed over the plains in Kashmir on Tuesday and Meteorological Department has forecasted inclement weather to continue in the region during the next 24 hours.

Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that as forecasted light rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light snowfall over the higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir on Tuesday evening.

“For April 9 and 10, the forecast predicts generally cloudy skies with intermittent spells of light rain and snow (over higher elevations) at many places. There is also a likelihood of thunderstorms and gusty winds, with wind speeds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph in some areas,” he said.

Dr Mukhtar said that on April 11, the region will likely see cloudy conditions with light rain or snow during the morning hours. However, an overall improvement in weather is expected as the day progresses.

“Again from April 12 to 17, weather is anticipated to remain generally dry, offering a brief respite from the unsettled conditions. However, a fresh spell of rain and snowfall is forecast between April 18 and 20, particularly affecting the higher reaches of the valley,” he added.

Meanwhile Traffic was plying from both sides on Jammu Srinagar National Highway on Tuesday.

A traffic police spokesman said during the past 24 hours, there was slow movement observed on NH-44 due to breakdown of 04 HMVs, single lane traffic at Dalwas, Mehad, Panthyal, Nachlana, Shalgarhi etc. and poor surface condition of road at many places between Nashri and NAVYUG Tunnel.

He said on Wednesday, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. However, HMVs shall be managed in a regulated manner after assessing the road condition, the spokesman said.

“There will be one way traffic on Sonamarg-Gumri road on Wednesday, while Mughal road will also remain closed due to snow accumulation,” the spokesman added.
