Pulwama, Mar 24: Amid concerns over water scarcity in Rajpora due to dry weather and illegal mining, the Jal Shakti Department has confirmed that the situation has improved significantly following recent rainfall.
In response to a starred question tabled MLA Rajpora Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir, the Minister Incharge of the department clarified that there is no acute shortage of water in the constituency.
The house was informed that prolonged dry weather had led to a decrease in water levels in Romshi, Rambi-ara, and Sasara Nallahs as well as a drop in the groundwater table, affecting five bore wells and two springs.
However, the recent wet spell has replenished water sources, restoring normal supply in the region.
The government informed that 12 irrigation schemes are fully functional, relying on gravity-fed water from the three nallahs. It also dismissed concerns over illegal mining affecting irrigation channels, stating that mining leaseholders have been instructed to maintain buffer zones to prevent disruption.
It was told that despite last year’s prolonged dry spell, the department ensured uninterrupted irrigation supply by diverting and channelizing water through stage contracts. The recent precipitation has further increased discharge in these nallahs.
The Minister Incharge said that no bore wells have dried up in Rajpora constituency due to weather conditions or mining activities.
The Minister added that there is no immediate need to dig new bore wells or tube wells for either drinking water or irrigation purposes in the constituency.
