Srinagar, March 15: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday said that the Keran area of Kupwara district has become a prominent tourist attraction, drawing a large number of visitors over the past two years.

Nestled along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Kishanganga River, Keran offers breathtaking landscapes and a glimpse into local culture, making it an emerging destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

In a written reply to a question in the Legislative Assembly, the Tourism Department said that while Keran has witnessed a surge in tourism, both local and non-local tourists face challenges due to a lack of essential infrastructure. To address this, the government has allocated Rs 93.91 lakh under the Capex Budget for the financial year 2024-25 to upgrade facilities in the area.

The planned development includes the construction of shelter sheds, gazebos, public conveniences, signages, benches, lighting, selfie points, hiking trails, and a children’s recreation zone to enhance the visitor experience.

The department is constructing a two-bedroom tourist hut in Keran to provide better accommodation options.

However, the government said that there is currently no proposal under consideration to establish a Tourism Development Authority for Keran, Gumgand, Dedikote, and Wogbal.
