New Delhi, Dec 18: During the Winter Session of Parliament, Ladakh’s MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, brought crucial questions to the forefront regarding road safety in India. He pressed on issues ranging from fixing potholes to addressing specific challenges in Ladakh and urban areas across the country.
In response, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, outlined the Ministry’s comprehensive approach to road safety. He emphasized existing guidelines encompassing crash barriers, road signs, markings, and improvements to junctions aimed at enhancing overall safety. Gadkari elaborated on measures for repairing damaged National Highways, including those situated in the challenging terrain of Ladakh.
The minister clarified that the responsibility for implementing and maintaining these safety measures falls on contractors during the operation and maintenance period stipulated in the contracts. He underscored the importance of providing essential services like ambulances and cranes during incidents.
Gadkari also touched upon parking guidelines outlined by the Indian Roads Congress, while emphasizing that the upkeep of city roads lies with State Governments and local bodies. He highlighted the necessity of adhering to specific codes and guidelines to ensure effective road management and safety across India.
