Jammu, Mar 05: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir spokesperson Dr Abhijeet Jasrotia on Wednesday condemned Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary’s remarks on Maharaja Hari Singh, terming them “unjustified and inappropriate”.
Addressing a press conference here, Jasrotia condemned any attempt to undermine the legacy of the former ruler of Jammu & Kashmir. BJP leaders Surinder Singh Gilli and Sanjay Bakshi were present on the occasion.
Dr Jasrotia said, “Maharaja Hari Singh was not just a ruler but a visionary leader whose contributions to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of Jammu & Kashmir remain unparalleled. His governance was marked by progressive reforms, modernisation efforts, and an unwavering commitment to justice and secularism. Any attempt to tarnish his legacy is unacceptable.”
He went on to highlight Maharaja’s “monumental” contributions, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare and administration. “Maharaja Hari Singh introduced progressive laws that safeguarded the rights of marginalised communities and promoted an inclusive society. His secular outlook ensured harmony among diverse communities in the region,” he said.
Expressing his disappointment, the BJP spokesperson urged political leaders to exercise caution and responsibility when commenting on historical figures. He stressed the importance of acknowledging the truth of history and respecting those who played a pivotal role in shaping the region.
“Maharaja Hari Singh’s dedication to his people is undeniable. Instead of making unwarranted statements, leaders should recognise and honour his legacy. History should be spoken of with accuracy, respect and a sense of responsibility,” he added.
Dr Jasrotia called upon the Deputy CM to retract his remarks and issue a clarification, saying that such comments only create unnecessary controversy and hurt public sentiments. He reaffirmed his party’s stance in upholding the contributions of great leaders and ensuring that their legacy remains untarnished.
The BJP spokesperson also touched on the controversy surrounding the “martyrs” of July 13, 1931, saying, “July 13 will remain traitor day and a black day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.”
