Kargil, Feb 28: The strategic Srinagar-Leh National Highway and the Kargil-Zanskar National Highway have been closed for traffic following heavy snowfall across the region.
The Srinagar-Leh highway, which had remained open until February 26th—marking the longest period in recent years—was shut down after more than three feet of snow accumulated at the Zojila Pass.
Similarly, the Kargil-Zanskar highway has also been rendered impassable due to heavy snowfall, with snow levels ranging from one to three feet in various parts of Kargil district.
Fresh snowfall measurements reveal significant accumulations across the region Drass: 2.5 feet – Matayan: 3 feet – Zojila: 3.5 feet – Gumri: 3 feet – Sonamarg: 2.5 feet – Gund Kullan, Gagangir, Rezan Rayil: 1 foot- Ganderbal: 2 inches – Kangan: 2 inches- Ganiwan: 2 inches
The Meteorological Centre in Leh has forecasted an improvement in weather conditions starting from Friday afternoon. However, the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil Shirikant Suse, has urged residents to remain indoors and exercise caution, particularly in areas vulnerable to avalanches. An avalanche warning has been issued for elevations above 3,200 meters in Kargil, effective from February 27th to February 28th, 2025.
In a recent development, a fresh avalanche occurred on the Kargil-Drass Road opposite Karkitchoo Village, leading to the closure of the road. Authorities are working to clear the debris and restore connectivity.
Meanwhile, the district administration has mobilized men and machinery to clear snow from urban and rural roads. Power restoration efforts are also underway, with several areas already reconnected:
– Baroo 1st (up to IMHP), Baroo 2nd, Bazar 1st, Bazar 3rd, and Panikhar feeder have been charged – Bazar 2nd (partially), Sankoo (partially), Barso (up to Shargange), and Drass (except Mushku) have also been reconnected.
