Srinagar, Feb 28: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said it witnessed a powerful wave of public support as a massive crowd gathered at Eidgah’s Gooripora to rally behind its liquor ban bill.
The signature campaign for an alcohol ban, first led by Iltija Mufti, saw a massive turnout at Eidgah, highlighting the strong public demand for a liquor-free Kashmir, the party said in a statement issued here.
The event was presided over by Former MLC and PDP General Secretary Mohammad Khurshid Alam, who emphasised the critical need for the bill. He underscored that Kashmir, a land deeply rooted in the spiritual teachings of Sufis and Reshis, must uphold its historical values.
Alam warned of the escalating drug abuse crisis and drew a parallel with the easy availability of alcohol, both of which are wreaking havoc on the region’s youth. “At a time when Kashmir is battling a severe drug abuse crisis, enforcing a liquor ban is more crucial than ever to protect our future generations from this growing menace. This signature campaign is a testament to our party’s commitment and the visionary leadership of our esteemed President, Mehbooba Mufti, who stands as a beacon of hope for the people. Her dedication inspires us all to champion causes of vital public importance,” he said.
The event was also addressed by several senior PDP leaders, including District President Abdul Qayoom, Abdul Hamid Kohsheen, Additional Spokesman Mohammad Iqbal Tramboo, Dr Ali Mohammad, Zone President Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, Mohammad Shafi Kundanghar, Waseem Ahmad Mir, Arshad Ahmad, Shiraz Ahmad, Ab Hamid Setha, Ghulam Hassan Bhat and others.
Locals present at the gathering hailed the “movement” as a crucial step toward preserving the cultural fabric of Kashmir and protecting the youth from the destructive impact of alcohol and drug abuse, the party said.
