Srinagar, Feb 10: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami has expressed serious concern over the administration’s failure to fulfil its promise of regularising daily wagers, casual labourers, scheme workers, contractual workers and others working in various departments.
“These poor workers are already suffering due to the non-payment of wages for months together,” he said.
Hundreds of these casual labourers and daily wagers today held a protest at Press Enclave Srinagar demanding regularisation but they were lathi charged and scores of them were detained, Tarigami said.
He said thousands of daily wagers and casual labourers are involved in implementing the programmes and policies of the government and play vital roles in keeping all essential services running are being deprived of their rights by the government.
“Despite unparalleled efforts of these temporary employees, their services have not been regularized till date by the successive regimes even though all the prerequisite formalities and other information sought from time to time has been furnished by them,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader said the weaker and poorer sections of the society have been neglected by the government which has severely hit their means of livelihood. “Most of these workers are the sole breadwinners of their respective families and how will they manage their day-to-day expenditure if the government doesn’t pay them their wages? Till their regularisation, they shall be brought under the purview of the Minimum Wages Act, keeping in view high inflation,” he said.
The MLA Kulgam assured full support to the protesting casual labourers and daily wagers in their struggle. He demanded early release of those who have been detained.
