Srinagar, Jan 29: Given the growing burden of cancer cases, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura has constituted a cancer consortium headed by senior doctors for its State Cancer Institute (SCI).
An official said that the decision was made in response to the rising burden of cancer and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, research and public awareness.
The committee had been tasked to strengthen multidisciplinary cancer care, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care and develop effective therapies for cancer.
It will facilitate cancer research, data collection, and epidemiological studies, oversee the functioning of the Multi-disciplinary Tumor Board at SKIMS, and support the development of the ambitious National Cancer Institute project.
The high-level committee will see the applicability of various existing national and international guidelines, creation and modification of locally relevant and feasible guidelines for cancer patients at SKIMS.
The committee of senior doctors will also give recommendations for protocols for various investigations and treatment for cancer patients. It will also organize community outreach campaigns, awareness, prevention and early detection of cancer.
It will be responsible for entering into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), partnership and Memorandum of Association (MoA) with various Governments and NGOs.
The committee will be led by Prof. Javid Rasool, Head of the Department of Clinical Hematology and In-Charge Head of Department of Medical Oncology at SKIMS, Soura. Its members will include Prof. Feroz Shaheen, Prof. Syed Besina Yasin, Prof. Tanveer Ahmad Rather, Dr. Abdul Wahid Mir, Dr. Malik Tariq Rasool Shah, and Dr. Syed Nisar Ahmad.
