Srinagar, Jan 25: The rising number of stray dog population in Pantha Chowk and Zafran Colony areas of Srinagar has left residents deeply concerned over the safety of children and elderly members.
Fear of dog attacks has disrupted daily routines, with many unable to move freely within their localities. Fayaz Ahmed Mir, a resident of Zafran Colony, expressed his frustration with the growing menace. “The stray dog population is increasing day by day, creating serious concerns for all of us. Our children cannot even step out of the house, and elderly residents feel unsafe walking in their own neighbourhoods,” he said.
Umar Nazir, a resident of Pantha Chowk said: “Children no longer play outside due to the constant fear of being attacked by stray dogs. It’s a distressing situation for parents who want their children to enjoy a normal, carefree childhood.”
Abdul Hameed Bhat from Zewan added his voice to the appeals for action, urging the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to intervene promptly. “The authorities must act immediately to address this issue. The rising dog population is affecting our day-to-day lives and we need a solution that allows children and elders to move freely and safely.”
Residents have collectively called on the SMC Commissioner Dr Owaiz Ahmed to initiate effective measures, including sterilisation drives and the creation of shelters, to manage the stray dog population in Pantha Chowk and Zafran Colony areas of the city. Many have also suggested that the authorities work on raising awareness about animal control programmes to ensure a sustainable and humane approach to the problem.
