Srinagar, Jan 09: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said his party does not intend to “fight” with New Delhi but seeks collaboration with the Central government to address the pressing issues of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We don’t want to fight with New Delhi. We want to work together with the Centre to resolve J&K’s problems. We don’t want to engage in battles. Those who want to fight can do so,” Abdullah told reporters here.
Abdullah said that unemployment remains a challenge in J&K, adding, “How will people’s problems be solved when unemployment is so severe here? Our hospitals and schools are in dire condition. We need teachers, doctors, and paramedics, but instead, unnecessary battles are being fought.”
The former chief minister said NC has no connection with the BJP but emphasised that the Central government must support state governments in addressing local issues. “We are not with the BJP, nor do we have any connection with them,” he said. “Both the central and state governments must prioritize people’s needs over conflicts that hinder development.”
Dr Farooq said his son, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is not influenced by New Delhi. “Omar Abdullah is elected as the chief minister by the people. He does not act on anyone’s instructions. He acts on his own decisions. Those who are under this misunderstanding should come out of it,” he said.
The NC chief said the dual governance structure in J&K will stabilise only when full statehood is restored. “We reiterate our demand for statehood as the dual power structure is hindering progress and stability,” he said.
Abdullah said the NC has taken a clear stance on controversial figures joining the party. “I was unaware of his involvement in any case. We announced yesterday that until he is cleared of all charges, he will not be admitted into the party,” he added.
He further said the INDIA bloc is not just about contesting elections but about strengthening the nation and eliminating hatred. “The alliance is permanent — it is for every day and every moment,” he said in response to concerns about fissures in the alliance, with the AAP and Congress contesting the Delhi elections separately.
He said the INDIA bloc’s purpose extends beyond elections. “The alliance is about strengthening India and eliminating hatred. Those who believe this alliance exists only for parliamentary elections are mistaken. The alliance is permanent — it is for every day and every moment,” he said.
Dr Farooq said the government must take steps to prevent tragedies like the Tirupati temple stampede, which recently claimed six lives. “The government should ensure incidents causing loss of life are prevented, particularly at religious sites and during festivals,” he said.
He said places of worship that attract lakhs of devotees require robust planning to ensure safety, especially for women. “With the Maha Kumbh approaching, the authorities must take adequate measures to avoid mismanagement. This is a once-in-twelve-year event where millions visit the Ganga. The government must ensure proper arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.
‘NC has legacy of prioritising women’s empowerment’
Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday asked women to emerge as pivotal agents of change in the upcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
He made these remarks while addressing a public meeting at Sodhi Resort, Barnoti District Kathua. The meeting was organized by Sham Narayan Mehta District President Kathua Rural, the party said in a statement issued here.
Dr Farooq in his speech emphasised the importance of women stepping forward as key agents of change in the upcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “It is crucial for women to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our region through active participation in the democratic process. Our party has a legacy of prioritising women’s empowerment, and we will continue this tradition with even greater resolve,” he said.
Highlighting the “incredible” contributions of “Madr-e-Meharban”, who played a pivotal role in the socio-political movement of Jammu and Kashmir and advocated for female literacy and empowerment of marginalised communities, the former chief minister said the National Conference has a proud history of supporting women, regardless of their background.
“Under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, the present government is unwavering in its commitment to empower women and ensure their rightful place in society. The party has always been a staunch advocate for women’s rights and will continue to prioritise their inclusion and representation in all aspects of life,” he said.
“We must recognise and celebrate the achievements of women like Madr-e-Meharban and continue to work towards a more equitable and inclusive society for all. National Conference stands firm in its dedication to supporting and empowering women, and will continue to champion their cause with unwavering determination,” Dr Abdullah added.
