Srinagar, Jan 08: The Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Srinagar, on Wednesday urged people to use ISI-marked electrical equipment and conduct regular wiring audits to ensure their safety.
Deputy Director of Fire and Emergency, Srinagar, Aqib Hussain, highlighted that nearly 95% of fire incidents are caused by electrical faults. He said that many residents neglect old and worn-out wiring, which increases the risk of short circuits and fire outbreaks. He advised people to conduct regular inspections of their electrical systems and replace faulty wires to prevent such hazards.
The officer emphasized that issues like defective Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), overloaded circuits, poor-quality electrical fittings, and unregulated use of extension cords often lead to electrical sparks. He urged people to ensure proper earthing and avoid makeshift wiring, which can be a potential fire hazard.
He also cautioned against excessive use of heating appliances during winter, stating that such practices increase the risk of fire. He advised the public to use ISI-marked heating devices, as they undergo safety testing. Furthermore, he warned against using LPG-based electric connections and called for judicious use of LPG cylinders to prevent fire-related accidents.
Hussain revealed that 600 fire incidents have been reported in Srinagar in 2024, resulting in property damage worth millions of rupees. He stressed the importance of taking preventive measures, such as not leaving heating gadgets unattended and avoiding excessive use of charcoal and other flammable materials in urban areas.
Calling fire incidents unfortunate, the officer urged people to take personal responsibility for fire safety to prevent such disasters in the future.
