Srinagar, Dec 03: The six-week entrepreneurship training program on “Organic Farming in Vegetable Cultivation”, sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, from 21st October to 1st December, 2024 concluded at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K).
The program, organized by SKUAST-K’s Division of Vegetable Science in the Faculty of Horticulture, aimed to empower unemployed youth in Laar area of Ganderbal district.
A total of 25 participants from Laar and neighbouring villages were actively engaged in the program, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in Organic vegetable farming for sustainable agriculture. Dr. Ummyiah H. Masoodi, Assistant Professor in the Division of Vegetable Science at SKUAST-K, the Course Coordinator, highlighted the significant role played by the University and the MSME in fostering skill-based training and enterprise development. Dr. Masoodi emphasized that many participants lacked knowledge about the organic farming practices, and farmers were generally unaware of the crucial role it played in sustainable agriculture. She underscored the importance of educational programs and outreach initiatives to raise awareness and appreciation for organic vegetable farming in sustainable agriculture.
Speaking about the potential of organic vegetable farming, Dr. Masoodi emphasized its cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and adaptability, promoting a shift away from chemical fertilizers and contributing to waste reduction. The training program included theory lectures and practical sessions conducted by experts from various divisions at SKUAST-Kashmir, as well as specialists from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Department of Agriculture and banks. A variety of farm implements, seed and stationary kits as well as vermicompost bags were distributed among all the participants during the course of programme.
All through the course duration, the participants were encouraged to explore business prospects in the organic farming industry. At the conclusion of the programme, HOD, division of vegetable science, Prof. Asif Bashir Shikari, in his concluding remarks said that the initiative aligns with the Government of India’s commitment to supporting self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship, marking a significant stride in providing employment opportunities for young individuals in rural areas.
