Srinagar, Nov 26: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar commemorated the 75th Constitution Day on Tuesday, alongside Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrations, in line with directives from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The event, held under the supervision of Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, featured Prof. (HAG) Roohie Naaz Mir, In-charge Director, as the Chief Guest.
The celebration saw the participation of esteemed dignitaries, including Dean AIA Prof. Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Dean P&D Dr. Yashwant Mehta, former HoD Physics Prof. M.A. Shah, HoD Chemistry Prof. Hamida-Tun-Nisa Chishti, HoD Electronics & Communication Dr. Gausia Qazi, and Nodal Officer for Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas Dr. Kurella Swamy, along with other faculty members.
The ceremony commenced with the lighting of candles and floral tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chief Architect of the Indian Constitution, by Prof. Roohie Naaz, Prof. Nazir Sheikh, Dr. Yeshwant Mehta, and Prof. M.A. Shah. They collectively lauded Dr. Ambedkar’s unparalleled contributions to the nation.
Dr. Nasir F. Butt welcomed attendees with a thought-provoking address, followed by the reading of the Preamble in English, Dr. Brajendra Singh Sengar in Hindi. The program also featured students presenting impactful speeches and poems centered on the framing and significance of the Constitution.
A short clip highlighting the sacrifices and contributions of India’s freedom fighters was screened during the event. It served as a powerful reminder of their struggles and the foundation of the nation’s independence, inspiring participants to reflect on the values of justice, liberty, and equality upheld by the Constitution.
In his key address, Prof. Sheikh Nazir highlighted the historic importance of the day as the foundation of modern India’s democratic journey.
“The Constitution of India embodies the aspirations of a diverse and pluralistic society, securing justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all citizens,” he said.
Prof. Sheikh called for learning from developed nations’ progress, particularly in scientific advancements, and highlighted the need for a collective focus on future growth.
“Irrespective of religion or sect, we must foster trust and hope among ourselves to move forward as a nation,” he added.
On the occasion, Prof. M. A. Shah described Constitution Day as more than a celebration—it is a reaffirmation of the nation’s commitment to its democratic principles. He urged students to actively engage with the Constitution.
“Students should make it a habit to read articles of the Constitution daily to understand their rights and responsibilities. It is our moral duty to educate them about the great minds and principles that shaped this document,” he said.
Prof. Shah added that the day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress, confront challenges, and recommit to the ideals of justice and inclusivity.
Dr. Anil Singhal spoke on the unique inclusivity of the Indian Constitution. “Our Constitution harmonizes diverse ideologies and religions with fairness and respect. It is a document that empowers every Indian and safeguards their rights,” he added.
A vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Kurella Swamy, Nodal Officer of 75th Constitution Day Celebrations and Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Program Committees.
He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Education for the instructions and initiative to organise the Constitution Day and Janjatiya Diwas Celebrations.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to Prof. Binod Kumar Kannujia, Director, NIT Srinagar, for the directions, approvals and guidance in shaping and organising the various activities such as Quiz, Essay, Declamation Competitions as part of the celebrations with financial support,” he said.
