New Delhi, Nov 14: Noted Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Bhan on Thursday said the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru believed that the nation’s future depended on the intellectual ,emotional & fearless development of its younger population.
He made these remarks at a function in Delhi organised by Law Students federation of India,
“This day the 14 November annually is observed as Children’s Day, that honours the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. also known as Chacha Nehru, had a deep affection for children and enjoyed spending his time with them.
Bhan said Nehru planned the establishment of various educational programs, the basic and high end institutions and universities aimed at uplifting the youth of India.

Bhan said it’s a proud moment to pay tribute to a leader who played a major role in India’s independence, integration and its development post-independence. “His leadership during the crucial early years helped lay a stable foundation for India to emerge as a strong and democratic nation. His commitment to scientific development, secularism, and advancement in studies continues to inspire generations.”
Nehru, he said, championed parliamentary democracy, secularism, science and technology during the 1950s, influencing India’s arc as a modern nation. In international affairs, he is well-known as one of the Founders of the Non-aligned Movement and, concomitantly, for steering India clear of the two blocs of the Cold War.

Bhan said. “It was Nehru’s vision, Sheikh Abdullah’s support and Army’s valour that brought Kashmir to India in the most challenging turbulent times of Partition of the Country. In the company of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru became a prominent leader in the fight for independence, advocating for non-violence, secularism, and democratic ideals. In 1947, when India gained independence, Jawaharlal Nehru became the country’s first Prime Minister. His leadership during the early years of independence was marked by efforts to establish democratic institutions, maintain unity in a diverse nation, and lay the groundwork for inclusive & modern socio-economic development.”

Bhan said this day of Nehru’s birth serves as an opportunity for the nation to reflect on his enduring contributions, not only in the world of politics but also in shaping India’s cultural and educational landscape and robust inclusive Indian society.
