Pulwama, Nov 09: Hasnain Masoodi, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Pampore, has called for a thorough inquiry into the issue of non-functional deep bore wells dug under the National Saffron Mission (NSM) years ago, intended to provide sprinkler irrigation to saffron fields in the area.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir over the phone, Masoodi said that approximately 111 bore wells were sanctioned under the NSM in 2010-11 but remain non-operational.
“The bore wells did not serve their intended purpose,” he said, adding that the sprinkler irrigation system is absent on the ground.
Masoodi demanded an in-depth investigation to determine why the bore wells have not been made operational over the past 14 years and to identify the steps needed to make them functional.
He said that the sprinkler irrigation mechanism was originally conceived to meet the moisture requirements of saffron crops during August and September.
“Despite the government spending around 450 crore rupees on this mission, saffron growers have not benefited as the bore wells remain non-functional,” he said.
Masoodi pointed out that there has been a 67 percent decline in saffron production over past years, warning that this year’s output could drop even further.
He expressed his intention to raise the issue with the government.
Masoodi further said that he plans to meet with Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar to seek his intervention in addressing the matter. Reiterating his demand for an in-depth inquiry, he stressed the need to uncover the reasons behind the bore wells’ lack of functionality and to explore available options to ensure an effective irrigation facility for the saffron fields.
“I assure the saffron growers of Pampore that a decision in this regard will be taken soon, one that will be in their best interests,” he said.
