Srinagar, Oct 15: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed G A Mir as the new leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) in Jammu and Kashmir, ahead of the government formation in the region.
An official order, issued by K C Venugopal, states that the decision was made following a unanimous resolution by the party’s Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), authorizing the Congress President to appoint a new CLP leader. “The Congress President has appointed G.A. Mir as the new CLP Leader of Jammu & Kashmir. This is for your kind information and necessary action,” the order reads.
Expressing his gratitude, G A Mir took to social media platform X, thanking Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, as well as the party legislators, for entrusting him with the role.
“Thanks to CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun, Rahul Gandhi (LoP), and Legislators for appointing me as a New CLP Leader of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mir wrote.
Mir’s appointment comes after his decisive victory in the Dooru constituency, where he defeated PDP candidate and retired judge Muhammad Ashraf Malik by a substantial margin of 29,000 votes. Mir’s political journey began with his notable win in the 2002 assembly elections, where he defeated National Conference veteran Muhammad Akbar Ganai, a feat he repeated in 2008.
