Kargil, Aug 24: Haji Anayat Ali, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council, has called for urgent action to address the growing unemployment crisis in Ladakh.
In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Ali highlighted the pressing need to introduce a domicile law to provide local youth with better opportunities for government employment.
In the letter, the BJP leader wrote, “With due respect, I am writing to bring to your attention an urgent matter that has been affecting the youth of Ladakh—the lack of employment opportunities due to the absence of a domicile law in our region. Since the establishment of the Union Territory of Ladakh, we have witnessed a new era of development, particularly in infrastructure and road connectivity. However, our youth are facing significant challenges in securing gazetted government jobs. The absence of a domicile law has placed our young men and women at a distinct disadvantage when competing for these opportunities.”
Ali said this situation has led to rising unemployment and a growing sense of disenchantment and hopelessness among the younger generation. “As you are aware, since the formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh, not a single Ladakhi has been recruited into gazetted government positions. This unfortunate situation is a direct result of the lack of a domicile law, which has left our local youth struggling to compete for government jobs,” he added.
He said the absence of such a law is exacerbating unemployment and leading to frustration and despair among the youth. In light of this, Ali requested the Home Minister to convene a meeting with all relevant stakeholders to discuss the introduction of a domicile law and address issues related to the Public Service Commission.
“These measures would provide much-needed opportunities for our unemployed graduates and help curb the rising tide of unemployment, which is contributing to a growing sense of depression among the youth,” he said.
Anayat Ali concluded by stressing the importance of addressing these issues, not only for the economic stability of Ladakh but also for the mental and emotional well-being of its young population. “I trust that your esteemed office will give this matter the serious consideration it deserves, and I look forward to a positive response,” he wrote.
