Ganderbal, Aug 05: In the aftermath of a devastating cloud burst and subsequent floods in the Kaw Cherwan and Padabal areas of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, residents are demanding complete rehabilitation or relocation to safer areas.
The incident has turned the region from Thune to Padabal Kangan into a life-threatening zone, with the land in Bonibagh also showing signs of sinking.
Locals have been appealing for a permanent solution for years, expressing that the recent events have only intensified their fears. They described the severity of the situation, stating that mudslides and floodwaters have entered dozens of residential houses, damaging standing crops and paddy fields.
Additionally, several vehicles suffered major damage during the flash floods that occurred on the nights of August 3rd and 4th.
“This area, especially Kaw Cherwan Padabal, is not suitable for us to live in due to the risk of flash floods, which can occur during torrential rains. Therefore, we request the government to provide a comprehensive solution for the welfare of the local residents.”
Residents added that when the cloudburst occurred, all the mud flowed into the PDC Canal near Kaw Cherwan, causing a blockage that resulted in flash floods. They said that the PDC department should take necessary steps in the future to manage the Power Canal, as it has previously claimed many human lives. They also demanded immediate compensation for affected families.
In another incident, a flash flood at Umbolung Pashkum has blocked the Wakha River at Pashkum.
Meanwhile, authorities urged people to avoid riversides, stream-sides, and flood-prone areas in Kargil due to expected rainfall. Member of Parliament Haji Haneefa Jan has requested everyone to stay clear of these areas to ensure their safety and facilitate emergency services.
MP Haji Haneefa Jan also called on Disaster Action Teams to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential emergencies, emphasizing the importance of their dedication and prompt response in mitigating the impact of unforeseen situations.
In a show of solidarity, Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, along with Executive Councilor Aga Syeed Mujtaba Mussavi, visited the landslide-affected areas of Sarchey (TSG) to assess the damage and provide support.
The residents of Ganderbal district are hopeful that their demands for rehabilitation will be met swiftly to ensure their safety and well-being in the face of these recurring natural disasters.
