Srinagar, July 28: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Organisational General Secretary Dr Mehboob Beg on Sunday criticised certain regional parties for their apparent “excitement” over the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir.
He questioned whether these “over-zealous” forces had considered the reduced authority of the J&K Assembly and the government that would be formed.
Using a metaphor, Dr Beg described the decline in the Chief Minister’s powers, saying, “We have come down from Wazir-e-Azam to Wazir-e-Aala to (now) Wazir-e-Adna.”
Referring to the perceived diminishing role of the Chief Minister’s office, the former Member of Parliament challenged these parties to reflect on this reality instead of merely seeking power.
Dr Mehboob also referred to the senior National Conference leader Aga Ruhullah, who won the parliamentary election from Srinagar, saying that success came to those who voiced the concerns of the common people rather than adhering strictly to the party line.
He said that in Baramulla, candidates who were seen as proxies or indecisive were unsuccessful.
Dr Beg said the PDP is the only political force “consistently representing the sentiments” of the people of J&K. He cited the recent development where the Director General of Police (DGP) made a statement targeting political outfits and said the PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti was the only leader who took the DGP head-on while the rest wavered in their response.
“Mehbooba Mufti’s strong reactions forced the J&K Police to come out with a clarification,” he said.
