Kargil, June 16:In a significant move towards women empowerment, the Department of Agriculture Kargil has initiated a trial distribution of Button Mushroom Compost and Spawn Units to progressive women farmers. This initiative aims to explore the commercial potential of mushroom production in the region, potentially transforming the agricultural landscape.
The beneficiaries of this program were meticulously selected through collaboration with progressive farmers, research stations, and various organizations dedicated to mushroom production. The distribution was supervised by Subject Matter Specialists Razia Banoo and Mohammad Abdullah.
Speaking to the media, Razia Banoo highlighted the strategic nature of the initiative. “If the trial proves successful, we will move towards mass commercialization of mushroom production under various departmental schemes. Our primary goal is to empower women through this venture,” she stated, emphasizing the department’s commitment to evaluating the feasibility of commercial mushroom production in Kargil.
Dr. Nasreen Fatima, a Scientist in Plant Protection at KVK Kargil, underscored the broader implications of the initiative. “This initiative has the potential to transform Kargil into an exporter of mushrooms to other parts of UT Ladakh during the off-season summer months when production in other areas is low,” she explained, noting the economic benefits and regional market potential.
The trial distribution marks a promising step in enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting economic independence among women in Kargil. If successful, it could pave the way for significant commercial opportunities and strengthen the agricultural sector in the region.
