Ganderbal, June 12: In a bid to ensure the safety of tourists and locals alike, the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has issued a new directive prohibiting selfies near water bodies, particularly along the Hung area of Sonamarg.

The decision comes in response to the rising number of incidents where individuals have lost their lives while attempting to take selfies in dangerous locations.

Signboards and hoardings have been erected throughout the stretch, particularly along the banks of the River Sindh, which include popular spots such as Gagangeer, Sonamarg, and Hung. These areas, known for their breath-taking beauty, have become prime locations for visitors eager to capture the perfect selfie. Unfortunately, this trend has led to numerous accidents, some fatal, as individuals lose their footing or become distracted by their devices.

The SDA and District Administration of Ganderbal have taken this initiative seriously, placing clear warnings on hoardings along the Hung stretch and other high-risk areas. The message is clear: no selfies near the river banks.

The measure is intended to prevent further tragedies and ensure that visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of Sonamarg without risking their lives.

“We urge all visitors to prioritize their safety over capturing the perfect photo,” said an official source. “The picturesque landscape of Sonamarg is best enjoyed with caution and respect for nature’s power.”

This safety initiative underscores the commitment of local authorities to protect both residents and tourists from the dangers posed by unsafe selfie practices. The SDA continues to monitor and enforce this directive, aiming to foster a safer environment for everyone enjoying the natural splendour of Sonamarg.
