Srinagar, Aug 08: The Zojila Tunnel Project, a crucial infrastructure development designed to provide an all-weather link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, has reached a major milestone. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari reported in the Lok Sabha that the project is currently 52.13% complete.
The ambitious project involves constructing a 13.153-kilometer tunnel along with 17.030 kilometers of approach roads, totaling 30.18 kilometers. With an estimated budget of ₹6,809.69 crore, the Zojila Tunnel is one of the largest and most costly infrastructure undertakings in the region.
Gadkari highlighted the employment impact of the project, noting that 1,043 locals have been employed by the Supervising Consultant, Contractor, and sub-contractors. This initiative aims to integrate the local workforce into the development process, though some concerns have been raised about the sufficiency of these job opportunities.
The Zojila Tunnel is expected to be completed by September 29, 2026. Upon its completion, the tunnel will facilitate year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, significantly reducing travel time and ensuring access during severe winter conditions when current routes are often blocked by snow.
The project is not only a strategic infrastructure asset but also represents a significant economic opportunity for the region. It is anticipated to boost local trade, improve access to essential services, and enhance national security by providing uninterrupted access to the northern borders. The government has pledged to complete the project as scheduled while addressing concerns related to local employment and socio-economic impacts.
