Kargil, Aug 18: Administrative Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Vikram Singh Malik, inaugurated a week-long certificate program on Yige writing at the Academy Hall in Kargil.
The event was organized by the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (LAACL) Kargil in collaboration with the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF), is part of a broader effort to revive and promote the ancient Yige script within the local community.
In his address, Secretary Malik underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage and commended the participants for their dedication to learning the script. He expressed optimism that the expertise of Yige scholars present in Kargil would help sustain this tradition for future generations.
Furthermore, Malik instructed the officials to coordinate with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for the construction of a new auditorium to support such cultural initiatives.
The program also included valuable contributions from author Kacho Asfandyar Khan Faridoon, who shared his personal experiences with the Yige script, and former CIBS Leh Director, Geshe Kuncjok Wangdan, who stressed the importance of prioritizing mother tongue education.
Purig scholar Issa Sabiri, speaking to the media, expressed his hope that the newly formed Union Territory of Ladakh would take significant steps toward the revival of this ancient script, ensuring its continued relevance in the region.
