Srinagar, Mar 21: The world’s first cloned goat, “Noori,” has died in Kashmir last week, this was revealed by scientists of SKAUST here on Monday.
Dr Riaz Ahmad Shah, ascientist from Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry SKUAST-K, told Rising Kashmir that the cloned goat passed away on March 15.
” The name to the cloned goat was given by one of the professors from SKUAST-K, as it was a female goat, which was the reason that  she was named  “Noorie,” which means “The light”. he said.
“She was the world’s first Pashmina goat to be cloned. This rare Pashmina goat is found at high altitudes in Ladakh. It’sfibre is very expensive. Noori died after completing 11 years of age,” Riaz said.
Pertinent to mention, Kashmir achieved a rare feat in 2012 when its scientists came up with the world’s first cloned pashmina goat – Noorie.

Noorie was born on March 9, 2012, to three mothers (one provided the egg, another provided the DNA, and a third carried the cloned embryo to term).

Noori was cloned by Dr Riaz Ahmad Shah, Dr Syed Hilal Yaqoob, Dr Maajid Hassan Bhat, Dr MujeebFazili, Firdous Ahmad Khan, and colleagues at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir in Shuhama.
The scientists from the SKUAST-K have brought the world’s first cloned Pashmina goat into the world through the cloning process.
